Quando nel 1962 Nelson Mandela viaggiava in incognito attraverso il Sud Africa per organizzare la resistenza armata al regime, la sua identità di copertura era quella di autista di un distinto uomo bianco. Quell'uomo era Cecil Williams, uno tra i maggiori registi teatrali di Johannesburg, militante nella lotta contro l'apartheid, e omosessuale. La sua storia viene raccontata attraverso interviste con amici e compagni di lotta, filmini casalinghi, immagini della propaganda segregazionista e delle lotte per la libertà degli anni '50. Spezzoni di fiction aggiunti e monologhi basati sui suoi scritti aiutano a ricostruire la sua difficile e intensa vita.  Dall'autrice di pregiati documentari come Paris was a Woman e Before Stonewall, un'opera prodotta in associazione, tra gli altri, di Channel Four, British Film Instutite e Dipartimento per le Arti e la Cultura del Sud Africa.Vincitore del Teddy Award come Miglior Documentario al Festival del Cinema di Berlino 1999. When in 1962 Nelson Mandela travelled incognito across South Africa organising armed rebellion against the apartheid regime, his cover was that he was the chaffeur of a distinguished white man. That man was Cecil Williams, a leading Johannesburg director, a committed freedom-fighter, a gay man. His story is told through interviews with friends and comrades, home-movies and images of apartheid propaganda films and of the freedom struggle in the 1950's, and fictional inserts of William's hard and adventurous life. At the film's heart are a series of monologues based on his writings. From the author of valuable documentaries like Paris was a Woman and Before Stonewall, a work produced in association - among others - with Channel Four, the British Film Institute and the South African Department of Arts & Culture, winner of the Teddy Award as Best Documentary at the Berlinale 1999. |
