Opera prima pluri-premiata, The Hanging Garden racconta il ritorno a casa di William dopo dieci anni di assenza. L'occasione è il matrimonio di una delle sue sorelle - Rosemary - con il suo eterno fidanzato, passione adolescenziale dello stesso William. La permanenza del protagonista in seno ad una famiglia al limite della follia (di cui fa parte anche Violet, sorellina-maschiaccio di cui William non conosceva l'esistenza), è punteggiata da flashbacks di dieci anni prima e dalla presenza del fantasma di se stesso, un ragazzone di 150 kg che penzola da un albero di mele. Humor irriverente (la vecchia nonna che praticamente masturba una statuetta della Vergine!), colore, surrealismo e comicità agrodolce, in uno dei migliori film della scorsa stagione. Award-winning feature debut, The Hanging Garden tells William's homecoming after ten years, the occasion being her sister Rosemary's wedding with her longtime boyfriend, William's teenage crush. His stay in the bosom of a family teetering on madness, including the tomboy little sister Violet he didn't know existed, is punctuated by flashbacks and by the presence of the ghost of his teenage 350lb self, hanging from an apple tree. Irreverently humorous (grandma practically masturbating a porcelain statue of the Virgin Mary!), full of colour, surreal, bittersweetly funny: one of the very best films of the last season. |
