 A New York, in un ambiente in cui l'arte può essere una droga e drogarsi può diventare un'arte, l'incontro casuale tra due donne provoca cambiamenti radicali nelle loro vite. Syd, fresca di laurea, cerca di farsi strada nel mondo dell'editoria fotografica; Lucy, un'ex-enfant prodige della fotografia fuggita anni prima a Berlino per non soccombere alle pressioni del mercato dell'arte, è ora tornata a New York con Greta, ex-attrice preferita di Fassbinder divenuta un affascinante relitto in perenne transito tra lucidità e incoscienza. Syd tries to have success working at a prestigious photography magazine; Lucy is an ex-enfant prodige photographer who escaped from the pressures of the art market, now back from Berlin with Greta, a former Fassbinder actress, a charming wreck drifting in and out of consciousness. The attraction between Lucy - a brilliant Ally Sheedy (The Breakfast Club , St.Elmo's Fire ) - and Syd (Love and Other Catastrophes ), is the core of this first feature of Lisa Cholodenko, winner of the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance Film Festival and of the Jury Prize at the Deauville Festival of American Films.
